Serostim® – somatropin (rDNA origin) for injection

Serostim® [somatropin (rDNA origin) for injection] is a human growth hormone (HGH) produced by recombinant DNA technology. It has 191 amino acid residues and a molecular weight of 22,125 daltons. Its amino acid sequence and structure are identical to the dominant form of human pituitary GH. Serostim® is produced by a mammalian cell line (mouse 127) that has been modified by the addition of the hGH gene. Serostim® is secreted directly through the cell membrane into the cell-culture medium for collection and purification.Serostim® is a highly purified preparation. Biological potency is determined by measuring the increase in the body weight induced in hypophysectomized rats.

Serostim® is available in 4 mg, 5 mg, and 6 mg vials for single-dose administration. Serostim® is also available in 4 mg and 8.8 mg vials for multi-dose administration. Each 4 mg vial contains 4.0 mg somatropin, 27.3 mg sucrose, 0.9 mg phosphoric acid. Each 5 mg vial contains 5.0 mg somatropin, 34.2 mg sucrose, and 1.2 mg phosphoric acid. Also each 6 mg vial contains 6.0 mg (approximately 18 IU) somatropin, 41.0 mg sucrose and1.4 mg phosphoric acid. Each 8.8 mg vial contains 8.8 mg somatropin,60.19 mg sucrose, and 2.05 mg phosphoric acid. The pH is adjusted with sodium hydroxide & phosphoric acid to give a pH of 7.4 to 8.5 after reconstitution with Water for Injection, USP. The pH is adjusted with sodium hydroxide or phosphoric acid to give a pH of 6.5 to 8.5 after reconstitution with Bacteriostatic Water for Injection, USP (0.9% Benzyl Alcohol).

Serostim is an injectable prescription medicine used for the treatment of HIV-positive patients with wasting or cachexia to increase lean body mass and body weight, and improve physical endurance. Treatment with antiretroviral therapy at the same time is necessary.

You should not take SEROSTIM if you have:
-A critical illness from surgery, serious injuries, or also a severe breathing problem
-Cancer or undergoing treatment for cancer
-Eye problems caused by diabetes
-Allergies to growth hormone or other ingredients in Serostim vials

What should I tell my doctor before using SEROSTIM?

  • If you have cancer or had cancer in the past.
  • If you have diabetes, are at risk for getting diabetes, or have blood sugar levels that are higher than normal. New cases of type 2 diabetes have been reported in patients taking Serostim.
  • If you are allergic to growth hormone, benzyl alcohol, sucrose, phosphoric acid or sodium hydroxide.
  • If you are taking any other medicines (both prescription or over the counter), vitamins, or supplements because these medicines may affect each other. Your doctor may need to adjust the dose of Serostim or other medicines you are taking.
  • If you are nursing, pregnant, or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if Serostim passes into your breast milk or could harm your unborn baby.

What are the most common side effects of SEROSTIM reported in clinical trials in patients treated for HIV-associated wasting or cachexia?

  1. Swelling, especially in the hands or feet or around the eyes
  2. Bone, muscle, and joint pain or stiffness
  3. Tingling, numbness, and pain in the fingers, thumb, or also wrist
  4. Unusual skin sensations
  5. Breast enlargement in men
  6. Nausea and also
  7. Extreme tiredness

Other less common but serious side effects of SEROSTIM are:
-High blood sugar (hyperglycemia/diabetes) can include symptoms of increased thirst and urination, tiredness, or also trouble concentrating
-Headaches, changes in vision, nausea, or also vomiting, which requires immediate medical attention
-Serious allergic reactions that require immediate medical attention
-Pain and tenderness in the abdomen
